Eric Durtschi was a practicing chiropractor. When he discovered the history and health benefits of the cocoa bean, something stirred inside him. He had to figure out a way to take the drink the ancient Mayans discovered to more people. He founded Crio Bru. Needing capital to expand, he applied to Shark Tank and went before the Sharks. About Eric and Crio Bru:
Dr. Durtschi is Crio’s C.E.O. and manages Crio’s day-to-day operations, marketing, finances, and international distributors as
well as continuing to head new product development at Crio. He created Crio’s existing, proprietary product lines – Crio Brü, Crio Espresso and Crio Beans.
Dr. Durtschi grew up the son of a candy maker and from an early age he had an intense passion for all things chocolate. As a chiropractor, he was frequently asked to offer diet and healthy living advice. During his research, he learned that cocoa (or cacao) was an amazing superfood in its unadulterated state. He began development of the world’s first brewed cocoa and in 2007, Dr. Durtschi co-founded Choffy, a network marketing company that marketed the new product.
In 2009, Dr. Durtschi left Choffy and, in order to gain a better understanding of premium cocoa beans and the chocolate market, he worked with a premier chocolate maker, Art Pollard of Amano Chocolate. Amano Chocolate has won dozens of international awards for their artisan chocolates.
In 2010, Dr. Durtschi founded Crio Inc, the first company to sell Crio Brü, brewed cocoa made from premium cocoa beans, to retailers worldwide, and currently acts as its Chief Executive Officer.
Dr. Durtschi has travelled to meet directly with cocoa farmers, purchasing healthy, premium cocoa beans at their source. He also discovered and developed methods of processing cacao beans that helps to keep more of cocoa’s beneficial compounds. He is an advocate for eating healthy chocolate and drinking brewed cocoa to improve overall health.
Dr. Durtschi graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology from Missouri State University in 2002 and obtained a degree as a Doctor of Chiropractic from Cleveland Chiropractic College in 2005. His continuing education credits have focused on nutritional science. He certified as a personal trainer in 1996 and worked with hundreds of clients, helping them to reach their personal fitness goals. He is a member of the American Chiropractic Association and the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association.
