Why are you living small?
Have you ever wondered what you’re gaining from living small? Why aren’t you living to your full potential? Why are you afraid to live fulling sold out? This is a theme that I’ve been addressing a lot the last few weeks in my coaching practice. Its an issue many people face. So what are you really afraid of? I found a quote in Og Mandino’s The Greatest Miracle in the World that I’d like to share.
“Because all of us know that we can be better than we are. Oh, it is true that most humans cannot translate this hidden feeling into words, but there has been something implanted within each human being that removes him or her, completely, from the animal kingdom. And that something, almost a second conscience, continues to remind us at the most unexpected moments of our dull lives that we are not living up to our potential. It is only logical, therefore that if we know we can do better and we are not doing better, if we know we can be earning more worldly goods and we are not, if we know we can handle a more difficult and better-paying job and we are not…then we do not think very much of this failure who walks around with our name. Gradually we grow to hate that person.”
Play big with your life
If you aren’t playing big with your life, you will gradually grow to hate yourself. Your dull existence will expand. Don’t we all have more in us? Don’t we all have something big to offer the world? I believe we do. I believe that each of us was created to be a reflection of our creator; to live sold out. Dr. Wayne Dyer has a quote that I love: “Don’t die with your music still inside you. Listen to your intuitive inner voice and find what passion stirs your soul. Listen to that inner voice, and don’t get to the end of your life and say, ‘What if my whole life has been wrong?” Who wants to get to the end of their lives with their song unsung. Isn’t today the day to stand up and make a change?
How do you live big, live sold out, live on fire?
First, identify your fire? What is the passion point in your life that drives you deeper? Think about all the activities you’ve done in life and think, if I could do something for the rest of my life and not get paid to do it, what would I do. In other words what do you love to do so much you’d just do it because of your deep love for the activity? If you don’t have an answer to that question, get off the couch and start living life. Go on an adventure, take up a new hobby, read different kinds of books, watch documentaries, travel to a foreign country, go for a backpacking trip or learn to sail. Do something different to shake up your life and then see where the pieces fall.
What are you really good at?
What is something you do better than a lot of people? This doesn’t mean you have to do it better than everyone, just better than most. What do people give you compliments on? Such as, you are so patient and you always stick with your tasks until they’re completed. Or you understand this program so much better than other people. What do you feel uniquely gifted to do? Your answer to this question can’t be I don’t know. You do know, but if you’re having a hard time figuring it out I’m going to give you an assignment. Go to the store, buy a spiral bound notebook (you can get one at the $1 store). Bring this notebook home and every morning for a month, get up 30 minutes early and write three pages in that notebook. It doesn’t have to be scripted, or great ideas, just stream of consciousness writing. It can be, I’m tired and I don’t want to do this. Whatever, it takes to fill up the pages. Do this for a month and you’ll be surprised at what comes out. Find your value.
What makes you feel alive?
I love to hike because about 15 minutes into a hike my mind starts going and it’s as if everything in life is possible. I have good business ideas, I think about trips I want to take. I think about my husband and children and what I want to create. In those moments I have clarity. Being in nature and feeling very close to God makes me feel alive. It allows a level of deep gratitude for living to pour out, certainly it helps that I’m blessed to live in a gorgeous place, but that feeling, that openness I get while hiking makes me feel alive. It makes me feel mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally alive. What is that for you? What makes you feel alive, like you could gush open and your best would come spilling out? If you aren’t sure, start experimenting. Try new things until you get into flow. When that flow, that seamless peace enters your consciousness you’ll know you’ve hit it.
It sounds so cache, but it’s so true. Don’t hold yourself back. We’ve all had disappointments and discouragements in life that leave us feeling beat up, shutdown and at rock bottom. By not allowing yourself to dream big you aren’t allowing yourself to be the person you can be. Lay it all out there and go for it.
Stop making excuses
You’re not the victim and no one is the reason you aren’t successful. If you have the means to read this right now, you have the means to be an absolute success. Beethoven was deaf and he created masterpieces. Roosevelt had polio and was confined to a wheelchair and become President of the United States. Lincoln was born into poverty. Helen Keller couldn’t hear or see. Benjamin Franklin dropped out of school when he was only ten years old. Many, many, people have faced adversity and become great successes. Nothing is holding you back from becoming what you’re meant to be, but you and you alone.
Living large, living out loud doesn’t mean you want to be famous, rich, well travelled or materialistic. It simply means that you want to live the life that you are meant to live. Each of us is uniquely created with God given talents. Each of us has been offered the opportunity to live our best life. Is that you today? Are you living your essence? Are you who you should be? If not, why not? Today is the day. All we have is today, and this is the day for you to take the leap and live your value.
