312: How to Start a Fitness Business

Listen to the interview here:

Maurice Buchanan is the owner and founder of UGO1 Fitness, a fitness business he created so that he could help his clients be physically fit, but most importantly, do it his way. Maurice tells us how he started his fitness business on this episode of the How to Quit Working Show.

About Maurice:

I am Maurice Buchanan, this is my bio, and I am not writing this in third person because that would be dishonest and theres already too much of that in the fitness industry. I am originally from Louisville Kentucky and made my way to the frozen tundra up north in Minnesota with my life givers and my sister when I was in the 5th grade. I was always very active as a youth, which lead to me earning a full ride scholarship to the University of Minnesota to play football as a defensive end after graduating high school. It was at the U of M where I found and developed my love and curiosity for the human body from battling a number of injuries and wanting to know in depth why my body hated me. In between tackling people at practice, I managed to get my BS degree in Kinesiology. I also have a certification with some letters behind it that supposedly means I know a few things about health and fitness if I choose to use my knowledge for good. After college I became a personal trainer and found that I really loved working with and building relationships with people as much as I loved the human body. I worked for a number of training facilities, in a variety or settings, with a range of different populations. From athletes, disabled people, coach potatoes, people who loved working out and people who flat out hated it, I got to experience a wide spectrum of how people view their health and being in shape. I did that for 10 years until my disgust of how the fitness industry was being presented to people became too much to bear and I decided to start my own business (UGO1 Fitness) in February of 2013. I started UGO1 Fitness in hopes to convey the simplicity of being healthy and in better overall shape. I try to do this by kindly asking people to pick up and set back down metal/steel objects in an aggressive comedic tone, eat food that isn’t a tasty science experiment, get some sleep, and manage their stress and overall happiness. I write frequently on social media from a humorous standpoint with a dash of tough love and 2 scoops of profanity to water down some of the fear and confusion people may have about their health and also help get a better grasp on the onslaught of information they receive on a daily basis about how to take care of their bodies. My only priority as the owner of UGO1 Fitness, is to give people a better understanding of this skin and meat puppet suit that we all have to walk around in for the rest of our lives is not that complex to take care of, live in, and be happy with. If it were that complicated we’d all be dead by now.
